Why is Product Traceability so critical in the Pharmaceutical Industry?

Traceability has always been a key issue in the Pharmaceutical Industry. However, recently its importance, and in particular the requirements for batch tracking, have increased immensely, and will continue to do so for a number of reasons.

1) Regulatory Compliance

Firstly, regulatory compliance is becoming far more difficult to achieve within pharmaceutical supply chain management. The recent law passed by the European Commission on the 16th of February 2011, regarding "new legislation aimed at better protecting EU citizens from the dangers of falsified medicines", will have a crucial impact on Pharmaceutical wholesalers and distributors throughout the European Union, as it is accepted and introduced by each Member State.

2) Product Recalls

Secondly, there have been a number of examples, not only in the Pharmaceutical Industry, of the costs and inevitable problems resulting from a widespread recall of products. Not only is there a considerable financial cost involved, but there is also significant and often-times irreparable damage caused to company reputation and consumer confidence.

3) Direct to Pharmacy Model

Thirdly, with the Direct to Pharmacy Model increasing in popularity amongst manufacturers, the ability to demonstrate and guarantee the pedigree of Pharmaceutical products from manufacturer, through each stage of the supply chain, has become paramount. The Co-operative Pharmacy realized this and took action through the adoption of the AWARDS-BA3 Batch Control Module in 2009. For more information regarding this implementation download The Co-operative Pharmacy Case Study.
